Root/Unroot your Xperia Ray St18i running GingerBread

Today we are going to see how to root your Xperia Ray St18i(is applicable for almost all 2011 Xperia smart phones), most of those who own a smart phone are worried thinking whether rooting will brick your phone. Even I was too tensed while doing all these stuffs. But now its all easy and bricking is really an outcome of careless flashing of Kernels and Roms or doing OTA Upgrade with an unlocked boot loader. You will come to know about this is coming posts.

Many people think flashing your mobile with custom ROM and Kernel is not their cup of coffee and this post is exclusively for those kind of people who hesitate to learn less and do more. Now doing the below mentioned things, you would easily root your smart phone which is probably the most easy way discovered as of now. Only condition is that ye smart phone should be running GB.

MAJOR WARNING – ICS (4.x) doesn’t work with it & any update to GB (2.3.x) after November 2011 won’t either.

ROOTING

Download the this file, extract it using winzip/winrar

Go to the folder where its extracted and execute “RUNME.bat”

Read and follow the instructions on the screen!

[*] This script will:
(1) root ur device using latest zergRush exploit (16 Nov)
(2) install Busybox (1.18.4)
(3) install SU files (binary: 3.0.3 and apk: 3.0.6)

[*] Before u begin:
(1) make sure you have installed adb drivers for your device
(2) enable “USB DEBUGGING”
from (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development)
(3) enable “UNKNOWN SOURCES”
from (Menu\Settings\Applications)
(4) [OPTIONAL] increase screen timeout to 10 minutes
(5) connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC

After doing this your mobile will restart more than twice, but don’t be panic, once its done just check whether there is some folder named Superuser. If you have found one, then you are done. \m/

Doing all these you won’t get ye boot loader unlocked and my next post will be on unlocking that.
So as of now you will be able to install softwares like Root Uninstaller and remove all the crappy softwares that Xperia have prebuilt. That itself would gain you more speed and performance.Other must haves are Titanium backup, SetCPU which can really enhance ye smart phone performance.

UNROOTING

Now what if you think that this method does not make a difference in performance or power? Don’t go desperate thinking that you have removed the warranty of ye mobile,Yes you can easily Unroot ye device and restore it to older position (So that no one would figure out that you have already rooted ye mobile) by downloading the this file, doing the same as you did for rooting.

Extract it using winzip/winrar

Go to the folder where its extracted and execute “RUNME-UNROOT.bat”

Read and follow the instructions on the screen!

---------------------------------------------------------------
Easy rooting toolkit (v1.0)
UNROOTING SCRIPT
created by DooMLoRD
based heavily on Flash Tool scripts (by Bin4ry and Androxyde)
Credits go to all those involved in making this possible!
---------------------------------------------------------------
[*] This script will:
(1) unroot your device using special script
(2) remove Busybox and associated symlinks
(3) remove SU files and associated data
[*] Before you begin:
(1) make sure you have installed adb drivers for ur device
(2) enable "USB DEBUGGING"
from (Menu\Settings\Applications\Development)
(3) enable "UNKNOWN SOURCES"
from (Menu\Settings\Applications)
(4) [OPTIONAL] increase screen timeout to 10 minutes
(5) connect USB cable to PHONE and then connect to PC
(6) skip "PC Companion Software" prompt on device
---------------------------------------------------------------

Now you are done with unrooting your device. The script simply removes the super user files which was early installed.

You are done! \m/

In case some weird things happen or your mobile enters boot loop, do following!
Now what if you did something careless and your mobile is not switching ‘ON’, may be a boot loop might be an outcome your mobile. There is an awesome software which Sony has developed named SUS(Sony Update Service). Just connect in your mobile pressing volume down button and connect the usb cable to your mobile simultaneously and connect to pc and SUS would discover your mobile and do a fresh update (ICS) and would restore your mobile.(PS:Only problem while upgrading in SUS is we wont get root access!) I have got boot loop more than thrice and resolved like this every time.

NB: Rooting can void your warranty and I am no way going to take the responsibility if you brick your mobile.
